Five Million Safe Miles and a Career Built at Cypress
Some drivers pass through a company. Ronnie Norris became part of its foundation. Since joining Cypress Truck Lines in 1988, Ronnie has logged an incredible 5 million safe miles while watching the company and the trucking industry change around him.
In Episode 41 of the Cypress Truck Lines Podcast, Marcus sits down with the man many around Cypress know as “Mr. Everything” for a career-spanning conversation about old-school trucking, life on the road, the growth of Cypress, and the lessons Ronnie has learned during nearly four decades behind the wheel.

Nearly Four Decades of Trucking Stories
Ronnie’s trucking story started long before he joined Cypress. His father owned trucks and began teaching him to drive a semi when Ronnie was just 11 years old. By 14, he was already spending time behind the wheel while learning the skills that would eventually become the foundation of a lifelong career.
When Ronnie came to Cypress in 1988, the company looked very different. The fleet had roughly 50 trucks, operations were based out of what drivers remember as the “under the bridge” days, and Dave Penland Sr. could often be found riding around the yard checking in personally with drivers.
Ronnie has been there for much of what came next.

Ronnie has driven through 47 of the lower 48 states and into Canada during his career. California is the lone exception, and after hearing him tell the story, it becomes clear that is not an accident.
From Cab-Overs to Electronic Logs
Ronnie began his Cypress career in a two-tone brown cab-over Peterbilt. There was no power steering, no modern air-ride suspension, and getting out of the bunk meant climbing over the engine compartment.
Compare that with today’s trucks, which include technology that drivers in 1988 could hardly have imagined.
Ronnie has watched paper logs disappear, cell phones transform communication, electronic logging devices become standard, and modern safety technology change the way drivers work. He admits he was one of the last drivers to embrace ELDs, but eventually realized they did not change the way he approached the job.
Through all of those changes, the fundamentals have remained remarkably consistent. Take care of the truck. Pay attention. Secure the load correctly. Give yourself enough time. And never stop learning.
Advice From Five Million Safe Miles
After 5 million safe miles, Ronnie’s advice to new drivers is surprisingly simple: ask questions.
If you see a load you have never hauled before, find an experienced driver and ask for help. Ronnie says most veteran drivers are willing to share what they know, especially with someone who genuinely wants to learn.
He also reminds drivers that Cypress goes beyond the minimum when it comes to load securement. That extra chain, strap, or few minutes of work is not there to make a driver’s day harder. It is there to make sure the load arrives safely and everyone around it stays safe.
For drivers just beginning their careers, Ronnie’s story is a reminder that a successful trucking career is built one safe trip at a time.
