What does it take to build a winning team?
At Cypress Truck Lines, many of the same principles that work on the football field also show up in trucking: preparation, accountability, teamwork, discipline, and believing in something bigger than yourself.
In Episode 35 of the Cypress Truck Lines Podcast, Aaron Penland and David Penland III sit down with Marcus to talk about how football, family, and faith have influenced the leadership philosophy behind Cypress. Later, Cypress drivers Kevin Barritt and Tony Miller join the conversation for some college football predictions, rivalries, and plenty of trash talk.

Football, Faith and Leadership at Cypress
For Aaron and D3, leadership is not built around corporate slogans. It comes down to setting a standard, doing the little things right, holding yourself accountable, and making sure the people around you know they can depend on you.
Aaron brings a unique perspective from his time as part of two national championship teams at the University of Nebraska. That experience showed him what a culture built around accountability and shared purpose feels like from the inside. D3 brings the perspective of a championship-winning head coach, where building the right system and developing people are just as important as what happens during the game.
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
- How football helped shape the Penland family's approach to leadership
- What Aaron learned from being part of championship teams at Nebraska
- How D3's experience as a player and head coach influenced the way he leads
- Why doing the little things right matters in both football and trucking
- How accountability and shared purpose help build a strong company culture
- What faith-based leadership looks like through actions rather than words
- Why service, generosity, and leading by example matter at Cypress
- How Kevin Barritt and Tony Miller see the upcoming college football season A final safety reminder for professional drivers as students head back to school
One of the strongest ideas in the episode comes from D3’s description of faith and leadership. People do not always need to be told what someone believes. They can see it in how that person operates, how they treat others, and what they do when nobody is looking for credit.
Building a Winning Culture
Football gives the episode its framework, but the conversation is ultimately about culture.
A successful football program needs people who understand their responsibilities, trust one another, and work toward the same goal. The same is true at a trucking company with hundreds of professional drivers and the teams supporting them behind the scenes.
For the Penlands, leadership means creating an environment where people know the standard and understand that their individual work affects everyone around them. That philosophy connects directly to the teamwork required to safely move flatbed freight every day.
The second half of Episode 35 is considerably less serious. Kevin, Tony, Marcus, and the Penlands turn their attention to college football, including SEC versus Big Ten arguments, Florida, Clemson, Oregon, predictions, and the kind of friendly rivalry that comes naturally when passionate football fans get together.
